My husband Shalev is a chef who started running near 40. He quit smoking, laced up, and a few years later he has a 10K in 37:30, a half marathon in 1:25:48 and a marathon in 3:09:50. I know these numbers by heart. Not because I asked. Because he told me. Several times. Usually while I was holding a baby and a granola bar.
That's the thing about runners. They run, and then they tell. (It's also where our shop name comes from.) So if you're shopping for a runner husband or boyfriend, you're really shopping for two people: the guy who gets up earlier than the newborn to do 12 miles, and the guy who comes home and wants to talk about every one of them.
I'm a working mom of two, and I spend a lot of race mornings chasing him to finish lines. Here's what I've learned about buying for him, including what works, what doesn't, and a few gifts that aren't things at all.

Quick answer
The best gifts for a runner husband match the kind of runner he is: coffee gear and warm layers for the early riser, something that brags for him if he races, and socks or a towel he will use every week. Skip running shoes as a surprise unless he names the exact model, and remember the gifts that aren't things, like a protected morning for his long run or you at the finish line.
- 26.2 and Won't Shut Up About It dad hat ($34.99): the marathoner who mentions the race in every conversation.
- Long Run Done. Now You Can Talk to Me mug (his version) ($22.99): the early riser who needs coffee before conversation.
- Still Talking About Sunday's Long Run hoodie ($59.99): the storyteller whose recap lasts all week.
- Still Behind Me? Keep Up. running socks ($19.99): any runner, because socks get used every single week.
- Cold Miles. Hot Takes. beanie ($29.99): the husband who doesn't take winter off.
Run & Tell was started by Tal, a mom of two, when she couldn't find gifts for her runner husband Shalev that weren't cheesy or generic.
First, figure out which runner you're shopping for
"He runs" covers a lot of men. Before you buy anything, it helps to know which one you've got.
- The early riser. He's out the door in the dark and back before anyone is properly awake. He'll love anything that makes 5 a.m. easier: coffee, warm layers, a quiet house.
- The numbers guy. He knows his splits, his weekly mileage and his shoe mileage. He wants his work acknowledged, ideally out loud, ideally by you.
- The storyteller. The run took two hours. The recap takes four days. He wants an audience, and honestly, a shirt that tells the story for him.
- The new runner. He just started, he's a little obsessed, and he hasn't bought all the gear yet. This is the easiest one to shop for.
Most runner husbands are a mix of all four. Mine is mostly the numbers guy wearing the storyteller's hoodie.
Gifts for the morning (and the morning after)
The long run is sacred. So is the coffee that comes before it, and the second coffee that comes after.
Long Run Done. Now You Can Talk to Me | Ceramic Mug (His Version), $22.99. This one is basically a portrait of my kitchen on a Sunday. He comes back sweaty and happy, and only then is he available for conversation. Mostly about the run.
Pre-Run Coffee. Post-Run Coffee. Same Mug. | Ceramic Mug, $22.99. For the runner whose fueling strategy starts and ends with coffee. If yours refills his mug with his shoes still on, this is his mug.
Cold Miles. Hot Takes. | Embroidered Running Beanie, $29.99. For the guy who doesn't take winter off. The beanie handles the cold. The opinions about pace and shoes are on him.
Gifts that do the bragging for him
Here's a secret. Most runners want to talk about their race. Some are shy about bringing it up. A shirt or hat that starts the conversation is a gift to him, and a mild warning to everyone else.
26.2 and Won't Shut Up About It | Embroidered Dad Hat, $34.99. If he has run a marathon, you already know he won't shut up about it. Now the hat says it so he doesn't have to. (He will anyway.)
Still Talking About Sunday's Long Run | 3D Puff Print Hoodie, $59.99. It's Wednesday. He's still talking about Sunday. This hoodie has a raised puff print and a level of honesty I really appreciate.
My Pace Is Private. My Mileage Is Not. | 3D Puff Print Hoodie, $59.99. For the man who posts every weekly total and keeps every pace to himself. You know the one.
Mile 20 Was a Personality Test | 3D Puff Print Sweatshirt, $54.99. Every marathoner has a mile 20 story. This sweatshirt is for the husband who passed the test, barely, and has been processing it ever since.
Ran 10 Miles to Draw You a Heart | Unisex Cotton T-Shirt, from $34.99. The boyfriend pick. For the runner whose love language is a route map instead of a text. Great for an anniversary or Valentine's Day, or for the morning he walks in and says "check my app." Want him to run the heart for real? Our Strava art ideas link to free heart routes on your own streets.
Gifts he'll use on every run
These won't make him cry. They will get used every single week, which, for a runner, is the highest compliment.
Still Behind Me? Keep Up. | Funny Running Socks, $19.99. The left sock asks, the right sock answers, and the runner behind him gets the message. Runners go through socks fast, so a fresh pair is always welcome.
This Towel Has Heard About Your PR | Sports Towel, $24.99. For the gym bag or the car. It has heard about his personal record. Twice. Same as the rest of the household.
Electrolytes and Opinions on Shoes | 20oz Insulated Bottle, $36.99. He's full of both. One gets refilled after every run. The other never runs out, especially on the subject of carbon plates.
A gift for the whole house
House Rules for Runners | Funny Running Wall Art Poster, $29.99. "Don't ask how far. We'll tell you." "Muddy shoes stay by the door." Every running household has rules nobody wrote down. This unframed 18x24 poster writes them down. Hang it right above the shoe pile.

Gifts that aren't things
Some of the best gifts I've given my husband didn't come in a box.
- A morning off, on purpose. Not "fine, go." A real, planned, protected morning where you take the kids and he gets his long run without watching the clock. If you have little ones at home, this might be the most valuable thing on this list.
- A race entry. If he's mentioned a race more than twice, sign him up or offer to cover the fee. Check the date against the family calendar first. Trust me.
- A massage. Legs that just ran 20 miles will thank you. Book a sports or deep tissue massage for the week after a big race.
- A good sports watch. Only if you know exactly which one he wants. Runners are picky about features and fit for good reasons. If you're not sure, a gift card is the smarter move.
One thing I'd skip as a surprise: running shoes. He has a specific model, a specific size and a specific opinion. Ask, or get a gift card.
The gift he doesn't know he wants: you at the finish line
Here's the honest part. Of everything I've ever given Shalev, nothing beats being there. Seeing a familiar face at mile 23 changes a race. A sign with his name on it in huge letters changes it even more.
If you're going to be his support crew, make it easy on yourself:
- Plan where you'll stand and when with our free marathon spectator planner. It does the pace math so you don't miss him by four seconds.
- Make a sign he can actually read at speed with the free marathon sign maker.
- Need a line that makes him laugh at mile 20? Steal one from our funny marathon sign ideas.
And if you'd like a little something for yourself, because you also got up at dawn and stood in the cold holding his jacket, our support crew collection is for you. You earned it. Possibly more than he did.
How to pick, in 30 seconds
- Under $25: the socks, the towel, or one of the mugs.
- Under $40: the dad hat, the beanie, the bottle, the poster or the heart tee.
- The big gift: one of the puff print hoodies or the sweatshirt.
- The best gift: a free morning, a race entry, and you at the finish line.

Frequently asked questions
What do you get a husband who runs?
Start with what kind of runner he is. Early risers love coffee gear and warm layers. Numbers guys love anything that celebrates their miles. Storytellers love a funny shirt or hat that starts the conversation for them. And almost every runner husband would love a protected morning to run without rushing.
What is a good gift for a runner boyfriend?
Something personal and a little funny. A shirt like Ran 10 Miles to Draw You a Heart works for anniversaries and Valentine's Day. Pair it with a promise to come cheer at his next race.
Should I buy my husband running shoes as a gift?
Only if he tells you the exact model and size. Runners are particular about shoes for good reasons. A gift card to his favorite running store is the safer choice.
What are cheap gifts for runners?
Running socks, a sports towel and a good mug are all under $25 and get used constantly. A homemade race sign costs almost nothing and might be the gift he remembers most.
