How running pace works

Pace is how long it takes you to run one mile. Divide your finish time by the distance in miles and you have it. A 4:00:00 marathon is 26.2 miles, which works out to about 9:09 per mile. Pace is the number runners actually train with, because it stays the same whether the run is 3.1 miles or 26.2.

Most training plans give easy runs a pace one to two minutes per mile slower than race pace. If that sounds slow, that's the point. Save the fast miles for race day and the stories for after.
