Quick answer

The funniest NYC Marathon signs are about the city itself, not running in general. Our favorites:

  • Five boroughs. One ego. Go!
  • Fastest thing on Fourth Avenue since the R train. Wait, never mind.
  • Welcome to the Bronx. Don't worry, you're only staying a mile.
  • Fifth Avenue is a hill. Nobody told you because we love you.
  • The only line in New York that keeps moving.

Match the sign to where you're standing. A Bronx joke means nothing on Fourth Avenue. Keep it to five or six words if you can, and make the letters huge.

Brooklyn signs: Fourth Avenue to Williamsburg (miles 2 to 13)

Runners come off the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn still fresh and smiling. Early signs can be cocky. They'll laugh.

  1. Five boroughs. One ego. Go!
  2. The Verrazzano was the warm-up.
  3. You ran here from Staten Island. The ferry was right there.
  4. Brooklyn loves you. Manhattan will pretend not to.
  5. Fastest thing on Fourth Avenue since the R train. Wait, never mind.
  6. Only 23 miles left. That's like four subway transfers.
  7. Smile. You're in a stranger's camera roll now.
  8. I came on the subway at 7 a.m. for this. Run faster.
  9. Your Strava is about to get a Brooklyn accent.
  10. Worst parade ever. Nobody's even on a float.

Queens signs: just past the Pulaski Bridge (around mile 13.1)

Halfway. The legs know it, even if the runner doesn't want to hear it yet. Remember that spectators can't stand on the bridges, so set up on the Queens side.

  1. Welcome to Queens. Halfway done. Don't tell your legs.
  2. 13.1 down. The other half is the fun half. (It is not.)
  3. You've officially run a half marathon. Keep going anyway.
  4. Queens believes in you. Queens also has better food than wherever you're going.
  5. The bridge was quiet so you could hear this sign.

First Avenue signs: Manhattan (miles 16 to 18)

Runners come down off the Queensboro Bridge, where there are no spectators, and hit the wall of sound on First Avenue. Signs here have to fight the noise, so go big and short.

  1. Welcome to First Avenue. Please enjoy the noise.
  2. The only line in New York that keeps moving.
  3. Even New Yorkers are walking slower than you right now.
  4. Today is the only day nobody is honking at you.
  5. Faster than the M15. Honestly not hard.
  6. You're running past more brunch spots than you've ever been to.
  7. Pizza is a carb. Carbs are fuel. Run to the pizza.
  8. Mile 17 is still better than the 4 train at rush hour.

East Harlem and the Bronx signs (miles 18 to 21)

This is the hard part. Runners cross into the Bronx around mile 20 and come back into Manhattan about a mile later. Mile 20 is where a lot of runners meet the wall, so this is where your sign does real work.

  1. Welcome to the Bronx. Don't worry, you're only staying a mile.
  2. Mile 20: the wall has a Bronx zip code.
  3. The Bronx says hi. And bye. Keep moving.
  4. Harlem believes in you. So does your mom. Probably.
  5. You're not tired. You're just in your Bronx era.
  6. Four boroughs down. Your legs want a word.

Fifth Avenue signs: East 90th to East 105th Street (miles 23 to 24)

Fifth Avenue runs uphill along the east side of Central Park, right when everything hurts. If you only make one late sign, make it for here.

  1. Fifth Avenue is a hill. Nobody told you because we love you.
  2. Mile 23. The only time Fifth Avenue isn't about shopping.
  3. Five boroughs down. One medal to go.
  4. Central Park is right there. So is the medal.
  5. This hill is the last thing standing between you and bragging forever.
  6. You trained all summer for this exact hill.
  7. 26.2 miles and you still couldn't get a cab.

Signs for your own runner

One side for your person, one side funny for everyone else. Put their name in the biggest letters you can.

  1. Go [Name]! I woke up at 5 a.m. on a Sunday for you.
  2. [Name], I took three trains to see you for four seconds. Worth it.
  3. [Name], you're my favorite stranger on this avenue.
  4. Run, [Name]. Brunch is on you.

Type any of these into our free marathon sign maker, swap in their name and print it tonight.

How to make an NYC Marathon sign they can actually read

  • Short. Your runner sees the sign for about two seconds. Five or six words is plenty.
  • Huge, thick letters. Dark on light. Glitter disappears at mile 17.
  • Hold it high and still. Waving it makes it unreadable.
  • Bring a light board. You'll be carrying it on the subway between stops, so poster board beats foam core.
  • Tell your runner which side of the street you're on. The best sign in the world fails if they're looking the other way.
