Strava Art Richmond: 4 Shapes to Run in the Fan and Museum District (with Free Routes)

Richmond's Fan District and Museum District are made of long, straight avenues like Monument, Grove, Hanover and Floyd, crossed by shorter cross streets. That makes them a very good place for Strava art. Lots of parallel lines and plenty of corners to turn.

We ran these shapes through our free route engine on real Richmond street data, so you know where to start and what match to expect before you head out.

Four Richmond shapes, with where to start

Every number here comes from running our route engine on real Richmond street data with a 5 mile target. Our street data covered the Fan and the Museum District, so every start on this page sits there. We tested six shapes from three starts, and these four are the ones that fit. Your own score depends on your exact start, so the tool shows it to you before you run.

Shape Suggested start Match in our test Route length
Tree Museum District, Stuart Avenue and North Sheppard Street 98% 5.0 miles
Candy cane Museum District, Stuart Avenue and North Sheppard Street 94% 5.0 miles
Turkey The Fan, Hanover Avenue and North Meadow Street 92% 4.8 miles
26.2 The Fan, Floyd Avenue near North Davis Avenue 89% 4.9 miles

Tree: Richmond's top score

The tree was the cleanest shape in our Richmond tests at 98% and 5.0 miles, starting at Stuart Avenue and North Sheppard Street in the Museum District. Run it in December and your Strava feed turns into a holiday card. Our Christmas Strava art guide has more holiday shapes.

Candy cane: 94% from the same start

From the same Museum District start, the candy cane scored 94% at 5.0 miles. Run it in December and tell everyone the extra corners were festive on purpose.

Turkey: 92% in the Fan

The turkey scored 92% at 4.8 miles from Hanover Avenue and North Meadow Street in the Fan. It also scored 92% at 5.1 miles from the Museum District start. The legs are out and back, so you will run down a block and turn right around. Set the distance to 3.1 for a homemade turkey trot, and check the new score before you go. Our turkey running route guide has the full Thanksgiving plan.

What about a heart or a star?

At a 5 mile target, the heart and the star did not fit inside our Richmond street data from any of our three starts, so we have no score to share for them. Pick a start in the tool and it will show you the score before you run.

Richmond Marathon week

The Richmond Marathon is Saturday, November 14, 2026, with the marathon starting at 7:00 a.m. on Broad Street downtown, so race week is a great excuse for an art run. Want a 26.2 instead of a picture? It scored 89% at 4.9 miles in our tests, starting on Floyd Avenue near North Davis Avenue. Numbers have more corners than pictures, so if it looks jagged, add a mile or slide the start a few blocks. Cheering instead of running? Our Richmond Marathon spectator guide covers the Party Zones at miles 7, 13 and 19 and the finish, our free Marathon Spectator Planner times the drive between them, and the Marathon Sign Maker makes a sign your runner can actually read.

Richmond tips for cleaner art

Use the long avenues. The Fan and the Museum District are full of long parallel avenues, so the engine has plenty of straight lines to work with.

Watch the alleys. The Fan has plenty of narrow alleys. They help the shape, but some are quiet or private, so check the route before you go.

Move the start, not the shape. If your score is low, slide the start a few blocks before you give up on the shape. In our tests, moving the 26.2 from Stuart and Sheppard to Floyd and Davis took it from 83% to 89%.

Check the route first. Some streets may be busy or closed, especially around race weekend. Stick to sidewalks and paths, and follow traffic rules. The tool does not know about construction, events or which crosswalk has the longest light.

Keep your home private. Start a few blocks from home or use a privacy zone in your app.

For the runner whose feed is now mostly art, the My Strava Has Better Art Than My Living Room tee says it best. And for the one who ran you a heart anyway, the Ran 10 Miles to Draw You a Heart tee is the receipt.
