Quick answer

The 2026 Indianapolis Monumental Marathon is on Saturday, November 7, 2026. The marathon and half marathon start at 8:00 a.m. in downtown Indianapolis and finish downtown too, with the Post Race Celebration on Washington Street. The official site points spectators to Riverside Park at mile 20, reached from the race site by I-65 North. Most people can see a runner near the start, at mile 20 and at the finish. The course closes at 3:30 p.m.

Run & Tell was started by Tal, a mom of two, when she couldn't find gifts for her runner husband Shalev that weren't cheesy or generic.

Your runner trained for months. You trained for parking. That counts. This Monumental Marathon spectator guide sticks to what the official race site says for 2026, then adds the support crew part: timing, signs and where to meet after.

Start and finish: the basics

A few facts from the official site shape the whole day:

  • Start and finish are both downtown. The race's 2026 questions page says the Indiana Convention Center is one block south of the start and finish areas on Maryland Street.
  • One gun for the long races. The marathon and half marathon start together at 8:00 a.m. The 5K starts at 8:40 a.m.
  • Gear check opens at 6:30 a.m. at Washington Street and West Street, a handy landmark if you're walking your runner in.
  • The course is open for seven hours. The finish line closes at 3:30 p.m.
  • The party is next to the finish. The Post Race Celebration runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Washington Street, in the west block of the finish line area.

The race calls the course "fast and flat." It winds through downtown and several historic neighborhoods and Cultural Districts, and the official course map marks landmarks such as Monument Circle, Butler University, Newfields and the Indiana Statehouse. Open the official course map the week of the race, because details can change. Running a shakeout downtown that week? Our Strava art routes for Indianapolis start a few blocks from Monument Circle.

The best cheering spots by mile

For 2026, the official site names one spectator spot by mile, and it's a good one. The race also says its 2026 Cheer Stop Partners are "to be announced," so check the spectator page again closer to race day.

Downtown near the convention center. Say goodbye, take a photo of what they're wearing, then move.

Miles 7 to 8: the split

The race says the marathon and half marathon split between miles 7 and 8, and marathoners must get there by 10:25 a.m. The official pages we checked don't name a spectator spot here, so we're not sending you to one. It matters for the timing, though. If your runner is doing the half, after this point you're cheering a different race.

Mile 20: Riverside Park

This is the official pick. The race says runners at Riverside Park "could use a familiar face and some encouragement." Mile 20 is where marathons stop being polite. The historic Heslar Naval Armory sits just after mile 20, per the race. If you can only make one stop on the course, make it this one.

The finish and the Post Race Celebration

Head back downtown for the finish. The Post Race Celebration is on Washington Street, in the west block of the finish line area. The race itself suggests the route of going to Riverside Park and then back to the race site to meet your runner at the finish.

How to move between spots

The official spectator page gives two ways to get around:

  1. Drive by I-65. The race publishes a map from the race site to Riverside Park and back by I-65 North, and back again for the finish.
  2. Ride the bike trails. The race says you can see your runner at several points by riding Indianapolis bike trails that cross the course. Its bike trail course map shows the Monon Trail, the Cultural Trail, the Canal Towpath, the Fall Creek Trail and the White River Greenway, plus Pacers Bikeshare stations and free, secure bike parking. The race links to Pacers Bike Share for rentals and asks riders to wear a helmet and follow traffic laws.

Do the timing math first

Here's a simple example. A runner who starts at 8:00 a.m. and holds a 9:00 per mile pace reaches mile 20 at about 11:00 a.m. and finishes at about 11:56 a.m. That gives you under an hour to get from Riverside Park back downtown and find a spot.

Use the start time from your runner's own race confirmation, not the gun time.

Our free Marathon Spectator Planner does this math for you. It has no Monumental preset, so pick "Any marathon," then enter your runner's start time and either their goal finish time or their pace per mile. It shows roughly when they'll pass each mile, and if you pick two spots it tells you how much time you have to get between them. It's built for the full 26.2, so it doesn't cover half marathoners yet.

Parking, transit and road closures

Parking. As of mid-October, the official parking page still says to check back for race day parking options, so check the race site closer to race day. For now it gives a 2026 hotels and parking map that lists downtown garages (Circle Block, Pan Am Plaza, Capitol Commons and Market Tower garages among them), plus the Visit Indy and Downtown Indy parking guides. Downtown Indy counts more than 73,000 parking spots. The race also recommends the ParkMobile app, which it says covers most street spots and flat lots.

Road closures. Read the official race day traffic restrictions map before you drive downtown. Restrictions run in windows from as early as 5:00 a.m. to as late as 5:30 p.m., depending on the street, and some roads stay open all day. Northbound West Street is closed for the new start line setup, and the parking map shows West Street as southbound only from 5:00 to 10:00 a.m. The race also warns that significant construction continues downtown, so use a navigation app.

Transit. The official pages we checked don't cover buses or shuttles for spectators. The only getting-around option they suggest besides driving is Pacers Bike Share.

How to track your runner

Download the Beyond Monumental app and select the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon. You can search by name or bib number. The race says updates come from timing checkpoints, not live location, so they may lag. Use it with your own pace math, and agree on which side of the road you'll stand on.

What to bring

Early November means a lot of standing still. Bring layers, a hat, gloves and shoes made for walking, plus snacks, water, a charged phone and a portable charger. Bring your sign and your runner's warm jacket for the finish.

All of that needs a bag. Our Support Crew: Snacks, Signs and Your Car Keys tote ($27.99) is basically the job description with handles. Want your outfit to do some cheering too? The Spectator. Trained 0 Miles. Cheered All 26.2. t-shirt ($39.99) works under a jacket.

The full checklist is in our guide to what to bring to a marathon as a spectator.

Sign ideas for Indianapolis

Your runner gets about two seconds to read your sign. Use big, thick letters, five or six words, high contrast, and hold it still. A few lines for Indy:

  • "You are literally monumental"
  • "Mile 20: Riverside Park believes in you"
  • "Flat and fast, they said. Go prove it"
  • "Go [name], the couch is waiting"
  • "Smile, you paid for this"
  • "Toenails are overrated"

Our free Marathon Sign Maker lays out a big, readable sign with your runner's name and a funny line. Download it or print it at 11 x 17 inches, and there's a print on letter option for home printers. Need more jokes? Our list of funny marathon signs has 42.

Meeting your runner after the finish

The official pages don't describe a family meet-up area, so make your own plan:

  • Pick one landmark the night before and write it down for both of you.
  • Assume texts will be slow. If you agreed on a spot, you don't need them.
  • Bring something warm and a snack they actually like.

If they ran well, and you know they did, the Mile 20 Was a Personality Test sweatshirt ($54.99) says it for them. There are more ideas in our gifts for marathon and half marathon finishers.

Cheering a different race this fall? Our Richmond Marathon spectator guide follows the same plan.

Cheering someone through 26.2? The support crew shop has shirts and totes for the people holding the signs, and the marathon finisher gifts are for your runner once they can walk again.
